Trailing a new way of teaching reading at Branston Junior Academy

Over recent years,  the main method of teaching reading in our school has been to give children short texts to read, discuss and answer questions on. Additionally, children borrow books from our reading scheme to support their reading in school and at home, at a level which matches their own  reading ability.

Since meeting with colleagues in Spain and Poland, we wanted to try sharing whole class texts and studying these together. We have bought 12 new sets of books which will be studied at each age range, so children will read three books together each year. Children can follow along as the class teacher reads, read to themselves or a partner as decided by the class teacher. They will complete tasks such as character studies, make predictions about what might happen next and discuss words they are unfamiliar with as well as meeting other objectives from the National Curriculum.  Children are really enjoying this new approach.
