The context of this project is to address issues that all partner schools have identified in their own setting with regards to the teaching of reading at primary age. In modern day society, with an increase in the technology available to children, and with more pressure on teachers to deliver a skills-based curriculum, opportunities to inspire children to read for enjoyment are less frequent. This in turn impacts on a child's ability to read to learn and therefore increases their potential to access the curriculum at a higher level and with independence. We want to target children who lack inspiration in reading and to develop skills beyond the basic ones of decoding, by encouraging them to discuss texts they have read and learn from each other. We have looked at local schools and shared best practice in our local and national areas and now feel that we would benefit from learning from schools transnationally. Additionally, children conversing with other children from different backgrounds and locations in books they have read will broaden their horizons and give them a different viewpoint.
